Step-by-step guide to using dishwasher salt helps soften hard water and prevents limescale buildup inside your machine

Step 1

Locate the Dishwasher Salt Compartment
  • Open the dishwasher door.
  • Pull out the bottom rack.
  • Look at the bottom of the dishwasher tub.
  • You will see a round screw cap — this is the salt reservoir.

Step 2

Open the Salt Reservoir
  • Turn the salt cap counter-clockwise to unscrew it.
  • If it’s the first time using the dishwasher, you may see water inside — this is normal.
  • Insert the small funnel that usually comes with the dishwasher.

Step 3

Pour Dishwasher Salt into the Compartment
  • Use special dishwasher salt only (not table salt).
  • Use a funnel if provided.
  • Pour salt until the compartment is full.
  • Wipe away any spilled salt to prevent corrosion.
  • Screw the cap back on tightly.
Typical capacity : 1–1.5 kg of salt depending on the model.

Step 4

Run a Quick Wash (Recommended)
  • If you spilled salt inside :
  • Run a quick rinse cycle to wash away excess salt.

Step 5

Refill When Needed
  • Most dishwashers have a salt indicator light.
  • Refill when the light turns on.
  • Usually every 3–8 weeks, depending on water hardness and usage.

Step 6

Important Tips
  • Dishwasher salt is mainly needed in hard water areas.
  • Even if you use 3-in-1 tablets, you may still need salt if water is very hard.
  • Never mix salt with detergent compartment.
